With their third scoreless draw against Crystal Palace this year, Newcastle extended their unbeaten run to a club record 15 games in the top division.

Vicente Guaita denied Joelinton three times, and Callum Wilson, Sven Botman, and Alexander Isak all missed headers as the Magpies, who moved up to third, had the better chances.

As a result of this draw, Newcastle is now eight points behind league-leading Arsenal despite having played two more games than the Gunners. The title speculation may now be put to rest.

However, this was Palace’s second point in four days against a top-four team after holding Manchester United on Wednesday. Palace is yet to win a game in 2023.

They had to wait 72 minutes for their first attempt on goal, which was superbly deflected over the bar by Nick Pope, who has now preserved nine straight clean sheets. It came from Jean-Philippe Mateta.

The Eagles had a mixed night overall, and in the second half they lost talismanic striker Wilfried Zaha to what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

Magpies continue their impressive run

Even Newcastle’s upbeat supporters could hardly have imagined that they would approach February with that as their lone league loss when they fell 2-1 at Liverpool on August 31.

With a point at Palace, they broke their previous record of 14 games in the top division without a loss, set in 1950 and 2011 respectively (both times across two seasons).

Even longer is their streak of first-half clean sheets. Eddie Howe’s club has now gone 16 Premier League games without conceding in the first half, becoming the first team to do it in more than 20 years (since Liverpool in 2002).

There was evidence to support a scoreless draw. In September and November, the score at St. James’ Park was 0-0; it was a Carabao Cup match that the Magpies won on penalties.

Although they had sufficient opportunities to prevail in this match, they have now played four league games without scoring.

Guaita stopped three relatively unimpressive shots by Joelinton in the first half. Additionally, the Spaniard denied headers from Wilson and substitute Isak, and Botman sent his shot wide.

Early opportunities for Miguel Almiron and Dan Burn and Botman were stopped by the Palace goalkeeper.

More mixed results for Palace

Palace are now in 12th place, seven points above the relegation zone, but in just 20 Premier League games this year, they have only scored 18 goals. Another season in the middle of the pack beckons, which may be okay for them.

Although there is potential, there hasn’t been much real advancement.

Four changes were made by manager Patrick Vieira from the team that played Manchester United to a 1-1 draw, albeit the four players were added in the second half along with late debutant David Ozoh. Currently, the 17-year-old is the youngest Premier League player for Palace.

In the first half, they had several quick-strike opportunities. Odsonne Edouard’s attempt was blocked, while Chris Richards’ attempt from the next corner was unsuccessful.

Their sole shot on goal during the game was a strong one from Mateta inside the box.

They are hoping Zaha’s injury, which he sustained when pulling up while chasing a ball, is not severe. With six goals, he leads all scorers for Palace in all competitions, which perfectly captures their challenges.
