Utah Gov. Spencer Cox will sign a bill outlawing the operation of abortion facilities.

The Utah governor intends to sign a bill that virtually outlaws abortion facilities in the state.

Following the legislation’s passage by the Utah Senate on Thursday, Governor Spencer Cox declared his intention on Friday.

Abortions would not be available from clinics under the anticipated law, and all legal abortion procedures would need to be carried out in a hospital.

Rep. Karianne Lisonbee of Utah’s state legislature proposed a bill that would forbid the licensing of new abortion facilities in the region. All currently operating abortion clinics would also stop operating when their licenses expired.

In order to address worries about responsibility in judicial exceptions to the Utah abortion ban, the law also confirms the state’s definition of abortion.

One issue with the trigger measure that worried medical professionals all around the state was the lack of clarity that would have made it challenging for them to carry out legal abortions, according to Cox.

Just after the Supreme Court reversed Roe v. Wade in 2022, a state law outlawing abortions from Utah from 2020 went into force.

Pregnancies involving rape, incest, danger to the mother’s health, and other frequent exceptions are exempt from the ban.

A law prohibiting gender-affirming surgery on adolescents who have not been diagnosed with gender dysphoria was signed by Cox in January.

In order to better understand the long-term effects, the governor emphasized the need to put a stop to “these permanent and life-altering therapies for new patients.”
